Throw It Out Thursday: 26 Seconds

Throw It Out Thursday: 26 Seconds

26 Seconds: That’s How Long it takes for the chemicals in your personal care products to enter your bloodstream.

Skin is our largest organ, it absorbs 60% of any topical product we use. Yet, conventional bath, beauty and personal products are full of harmful chemicals. The cosmetics industry uses thousands of synthetic chemicals in its products, in everything from lipstick and lotion to shampoo and shaving cream. The effects of the ingredients they contain can be more than just skin deep. Many of these ingredients are carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, endocrine disruptors, plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts) and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks) – say what?!. It’s true, these go on our skin and into the environment.

Each Thursday, we’ll explore chemicals frequently found in personal care products and discover popular (and probably familiar) products containing them.

Knowledge is power, and in this case, it could save your life.
